In the name of God

Phew! There seems to be an extended Diwali celebrations going on throughout this year. What with so many bombs going off with unnerving regularity. These death mongers have really been up to something; making my uninterested self take note of their progress. The striking feature is that the excuse (reason) specified for the mayhem is religion. Another aspect is the sheer number of occurrences of such mayhems. The aforementioned number is so huge that I can’t help questioning the need for religion(s).

To keep things simple, if one applies the ‘na rahega baans na bajegi bansuri’ proverb to the grave situation at hand and somehow takes baans(religion) out of the picture, one would be led to believe that the resulting pandemonium can be got rid of. However, the proverb is no equation; nor is the problem of any mathematical nature. (I’m sure mathematicians would argue otherwise.) Still, assuming, for the time being, the (absurd) solution to be a correct one, if I decide to declare religions null and void, as a responsible arbiter, it is my duty to delve into the coming into existence of religions in the first place. I guess such a brain-churning operation would lead to clarity with regards to the concerns of the pro-religion group(s).

From my most-likely skewed perception and line of thinking, I consider the only reason why men started worshiping God(s) is that there was far too many things that they did not understand. A possible example is as follows. Rains helped people in farming. Whenever there was lack of the same, people must have missed it. That’s when they would have looked up at the sky and hoped that it would rain. Slowly, with time, they would have started directing these hopes and pleas towards an entity which we today commonly refer to as God. With time, this would have spread to their other fields of interest also. Whenever people found themselves helpless they now had someone to bank upon. Someone to look up to. Someone to thank. Someone to blame. At different places, people would have got different ideas and they might have made different stories about the super-heroic deeds of God(s). Thus many different religions would have been born. Different in name and customs, but same (I hope) in the underlying ideas.

The above paragraph pains quite a rosy picture. Religion seems to be the most harmless thing on earth and the biggest boon to mankind. It helps you weather the storm when the going is tough. Also, it helps you keep your feet on ground in times of success. How did this boon become a bane? The problem lies in the fact that there are a few zealots with even further skewed perceptions than mine. In a country as huge as India, people have to tear down a mosque to build a temple. People want a new country so that they would not have to live with infidels. If a Hindu kills a Muslim or vice-versa, it’s taken to be an attack of one religion on another. While religion should have made ones life better/easier, sadly these zealots think that ones life should further the cause of a religion. How does one(other than the powers that be) benefit with more people/places of worship of his/her religion is simply beyond me!

I guess at a time when super-heroes are in, there needs to be some Religion-man to subdue these fanatics. Till then three cheers to killing and dying in the name of God!

another idea is that religion was simply originated to control large no of people. it gave them something common to unite under a roof.

the human mind has been manipulated very intelligently.. how else can one account for such fabulous stories of gods and senseless followings of people?? remember, the early gods were only the natural elements and the sun... the line adopted was when you cant explain, forbid questioning. put them in awe, wonder.. owe it all to magic, super-power...

to the followers of any religion, i put just one argument.. what if your parents had changed their faith or if you were born into a family of some other religion?

how can people be so narrow minded?? but i guess thats the way we humans are.. not just about religion but about almost all of our day to day activities...

@.
exactly... am sure had it not been religion, we humans (intelligent as we are) would surely have invented some other "concept" to fight and destroy ourselves and many others...

Very succinctly put..Hope those idiots-the religious fanatics read this and bomb themselves or their ideas.

@garam
thanks... well as far as fanatics bombing theselves is concerned... i guess they wouldn't be fanatic enough if they are changed by this... :D

yo gandhi! finally a classy stuff from your nib...good for the magazine. :D

No one fights for religion while fighting in the name of religion. There are of course quite obvious hidden intentions behind the pathetic act.

Now, if you think that they fight in the name of religion, I have a solution:
Government should make it mandatory to not get married in one's own religion. I think this should work.

Sorry to digress guys on such a wonderfully written post, but couldn't help helping myself to a few smiles on the suggestion of Anurag abt having inter-religion wife given the oft-repeated and proclaimed beauty of Muslim girls..[:P]...

@anurag
"No one fights for religion while fighting in the name of religion" had me confused with this little line of yours!!! the inter-religion marriage thing is truly ingenius!!!
@samosa
have your laughs all right... but the beauty anurag alludes here might not be of just the girls... ;)

post mast hai aur solution bhi. lekin jaisa Munshi ne kaha hai, religion hataana is not a solution, its not feasible too. "Dharma" ka matlab hi hota hai "the way of life". Aur agar aap ek insaan hain to ye raasta (the way of life) aisa hona chaahiye ki aapke kaaran kisi ko kabhi bhi koi dukh nahi panhuche. Religion n Dharma are quite different words. English is not able to explain the words like Dharma. परोपकार, ईमानदारी, कर्त्तव्य-परायणता, बड़ों का आदर, देश-प्रेम etc., these all are "Dharma" but not Religion.
वैसे तुम्हारे विचारों से हम पूर्णतः सहमत हैं. But your solution is not feasible at all, so please try to come-up with a feasible solution.

@manish
the solution mentioned was also mentioned to be an absurd one... so i haven't suggested any solution... and regarding a solution... i guess it would be modifying the brains of humans to increase the amount of "goodness" in one and all... not too feasible again i guess... but that's all i'm capable of... unfortunately...

@bloodyprince
thanks for vocab...
i found the mov excellent... very subtle... as far as killing everyone is concerned... not too sure... to chinese way of tackling a situation... a bit weary of it...
PS: does "hhmmm.. hhmmm..." by any chance mean "After reading your post, I have the following points to put forward"? :D :P

The post is of course, needless to say, very well put. More importantly, the thought behind it is very is pretty deep. I had also noted it about a purana post of yours- a poem if I ain't wrong. Indeed, that you do think so much about something that despite its absolute despicable make we have all accepted as an integral part of our lives is commendable and heart-warming.
Good yaar.... Long way to go...

hmmm...serious thoughts buddy...rightly observed..but there is little more into it...we the 'common' man are always beguiled by the big guns of the society..god can also be used as an alias though the real motive may be politics..we can never actually know the real cause..

ronsin said...

@chinmaya
thanks a lot! your praises are as good as your posts. even better here as the subject is me. :D
@kandy
very correct... in fact more often than not its politics rather than religion...

I dont know why religion started...but even i cant understand how can you kill someone who doesnt believe what you believe in...something even you are not sure about. I mean how many times is it that we do not seriously debate about the existence of God?? tht time it isnt allah or jesus or krishna. Worst part is i agree with you tht this isnt a mathematical equation and this wont end even if we eliminate all religions. Who knows tomorrow they will start fighting they dont wear the same dress or drive the same car. Its ridiculous and it seems to continue being so.
